Diane, We closed the old SIO technical report series, and started a new SIO technical
report series for electronic publishing. We are not issuing numbers to items in the
new series. SIO had numerous problems in the old series with author's wanting an
assigned number, and then cancelling publication after a number was reserved for
them, and subsequent numbers were already published. We decided that we didn't want
the additional workload of assigned numbers, and that having a cataloged series name
was sufficient for our bibliographic needs. We weren't going to be putting the
electronic technical reports on physical shelves in the SIO Library collection, where
consecutive report numbering would come in very handy for shelving purposes. I
made this decision in conjunction with our Technical Services Coordinator in SIO
Library, who is a trained cataloger. This change also gave us the opportunity to come
up with a fully-worded and better name for the new SIO technical report series, as we
left behind the old cryptically-entitled report series.
Old series named "SIO Reference"

New series named "Scripps Institution of Oceanography Technical Report"
