    Dear IAMSLIC,

    1. As you know for the last few years, the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries
Abstracts (ASFA) Bibliographic Database has been growing in size (also
"backwards") due to the inclusion in the database of the records contained
in the paper ASFA journals prior to 1978 (i.e. those journals which preceded
    the computerization of ASFA).

THE WORK IS NOW COMPLETED! All the paper ASFA journals, back to its
beginning in July 1971, have been added to the machine readable ASFA
    database.

The most recent additions (just loaded) are the 18,265 records from the 1971
and 1972 printed ASFA abstracts journals.

    2. For your more detailed information:

2.1 (year 1971, (6 issues; July to December)) The 5,827 records contained in
the 1972 ASFA printed journals have been added to the ASFA database. On
CSA's web based IDS service (accessible only if you have a subscription),
the records can be retrieved collectively by searching for(TR=1971 and
ud=200212). The records will also eventually appear on the ASFA CD-ROM. This
work was carried out by the ASFA Partner in India (National Information
Centre for Marine Sciences (NICMAS), National Institute of Oceanography-
    NIO).

2.2 (year 1972, 12 issues) The 12,438 records contained in the 1972 ASFA
printed journals have been added to the ASFA database. On CSA's web based
IDS service, the records can retrieved by searching for(TR=1972 and
ud=200212). The records will also eventually appear on the ASFA CD-ROM. This
work was carried out by the ASFA Partner in China (National Marine Data and
    Information Service (NMDIS).

    3. The other ASFA journal years that have been keyboarded/scanned over the
    last few years have been:

3.1 (year 1973) Approx. 13,500 records. The records can be collectively
retrieved by searching on CSA's web based IDS service ( TR=1973 ), or on the
ASFA CD-ROM by searching ( 1973 in IC ). This work was carried out by the
ASFA Partner in Kenya (Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute-KMFRI).

3.2 (year 1974) Approx. 13,300 records. The records can be collectively
retrieved by searching on CSA's web based IDS service ( TR=1974 ), or on the
ASFA CD-ROM by searching ( 1974 in IC ). This work was carried out by the
ASFA Partner in India (National Information Centre for Marine Sciences
(NICMAS), National Institute of Oceanography- NIO).

3.3 (years 1975-1977) - Approx. 45,000 records. These records were actually
converted into machine readable format from the printed ASFA journals many
years ago (however without the abstracts and they were only available on the
German ASFA Partner's host database system). Abstracts were added to these
records (keyed and/or scanned from the ASFA abstract journals) and all the
records have been added to the ASFA computer readable database. On CSA's web
based IDS service, the records can be collectively retrieved by searching (
    TR=1975 )( TR=1976 )( TR=1977 ). All of these records also appear on the
ASFA CD-ROM, where they can be collectively retrieved by searching (1975 in
    IC ) (1976 in IC ) (1977 in IC ).

    4. Note, soon (within a few years) the total number of references included
in the ASFA database should reach 1 million.

Season's Greetings to all from the FAO ASFA Secretariat.
