Jon, It doesn't have to function as a URL; my point being to create a simple
citation to co-exist with the DOI (not to replace the DOI). I don't argue
against the necessity to use DOIs, an important technological underpinning, but
I don't understand why the technological underpinning, the DOI, has to be the
only citation scheme supported by AGU. If creating alternate, short
user-friendly URLs like Journal of Insect Science is problematic for a publisher
to maintain, then don't do it. Create a short non-URL user-friendly citation
scheme that incorporates the volume, issue, and article number, or whatever
elements will identify an article succinctly. Keep it short and user-friendly.
I understand the desireability for users to use the DOI as the only citation
scheme, but we don't live in a perfect error-free world. I look forward to
seeing the user experience develop with DOI citations. Maybe the scientists
will have no problem using correct DOIs in their citations, and I am misjudging
them based on my extensive past experience with the current citation practice.
I truly wish AGU well with e-publishing; it's time for me to leave the discourse
to others. .....Peter

: But will that URL be the same in the future? Other publishers might come
: up with many different such schemas. The DOI is designed to be
: persistent.
: Think of it as an electronic equivalent of the ISBN, only on steroids.
: The DOI is an implementation of the CNRI Handle System. With a simple
: plugin or by using a dedicated proxy server, browsers can recognize
: a DOI and resolve it to its corresponding URL(s), leading to the online
: article. See http://www.doi.org/about_the_doi.html
