    Dear Ms Uhlinger,

Your query was directed to me. I have been
Director of Major Reference Work (MRW) Publishing for
Elsevier Science & Technology since the takeover of
AP/Harcourt by Reed Elsevier, but was previously the head of the
AP MRW group in London, and launched the IDEALReferenceWork programme.
My group was responsible for the publication of Enc of Ocean Sciences.

The situation with the online version of this work is as follows:

    1. The original IDEALReferenceWorks were not actually launched
on the AP IDEAL platform itself, but on an externally hosted platform.
At that time, the IDEAL platform was not configured to take
    reference works.

    2. In 2000, work started on the IDEAL platform itself, to enable it
for reference works. Hosting the works on IDEAL itself would have led
to increased functionality, and searching and linking abilities for
the reference works. Enc Ocean Sciences would have been one of the
works launched on IDEAL itself. There was a delay in the release of
these first "real IDEAL" titles, as the enabling work took
    longer than expected.

    3. With unfortunate timing, the work on IDEAL neared completion as AP
    was taken over by Elsevier.

I have been leading the strategy group for the future delivery of the
combined Elsevier MRW programme since the takeover, and it was an early
requirement of the Elsevier Board that the the company's combined
e-MRW programme be delivered via ScienceDirect, the Elsevier
electronic platform. IDEAL is being decommissioned and the brand
name will disappear. All IDEAL journals are being migrated to
ScienceDirect. We have been working on the technical requirements
for delivering the e-MRW programme via ScienceDirect over the
last few months, and ou proposals are submitted for approval
at the moment. Whatever the Board's decision, it is unfortunately
inevitable that a further delay to release of the e-versions
of the IDEAL e-MRWs will occur.

However, we are aware of the expectations of the community, and have,
of course, the details of those who have pre-registered for e-access
to Enc Ocean Sciences. Once we have a clear plan of how and
when the e-MRWs will be launched via ScienceDirect, we will be
contacting both individual buyers, and the community at large,
    with announcements.

    Again, apologies over this delay,

    Best wishes,

    Carey Chapman, Director
