Decision-support systems for fisheries. The "ITAFISH" case study General
Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Studies and Reviews No. 72
    Rome, 2001, 58 pp. ISBN 92-5-104701-4 ISSN 1020-7236 TC/M/Y2793/E $16.00 The
purpose of the ITAFISH project, executed jointly by the Italian Ministry of
Agricultural and Forestry Policies and FAO, was to design, develop and test
a computerized system or methodology for the organization, storage and first
analysis of the existing data on fisheries and aquaculture available in the
Mediterranean for decision-making. The system is based on a network of
institutions and users that exchange data and information using the
applications and exchange formats developed by the project. This paper
describes the ITAFISH project regarding: the context in which it was
conceived and developed, its contents, the input models, the functioning and
the outputs, and how it is managed.

European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission. Report of the Ad Hoc EIFAC/EC
Working Party on Market Perspectives for European Freshwater Aquaculture.
Brussels, Belgium, 14-16 May 2001 EIFAC Occasional Paper No. 35 Rome, 2001,
    142 pp. ISBN 92-5-104700-6 ISSN 0258-6096 TC/M/Y2792/E $14.00 Production of
freshwater fish is a major branch of European aquaculture. The outcome of
this workshop is to provide key information and strategic advice on how to
fulfil the production potential of the sector to: (i) policy-makers,
administrators and legislators; (ii) future investors; (iii) consumers; and,
particularly, (iv) producers. Trout and carp dominate European aquaculture,
whereas there are other promising candidates for culture that have not been
    profitably exploited.

Genetic resources of common carp at the Fish Culture Research Institute,
Szarvas, Hungary FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 417 Rome, 2001, 112 pp.
ISBN 92-5-104658-1 ISSN 0429-9345 TC/M/Y2406/E $18.00 Common carp is one of
the oldest cultured and most domesticated fish in the world, and is a very
adaptable species in both the wild and in culture coditions. The genetic
resources of common carp maintained at the Fish Culture Research Institute
in Szarvas, Hungary, are described in this paper. The genetic improvement of
common carp in Hungary started in 1962. Five main features were evaluated
that determined the economic value of the resulting
strains: survival, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, slaughter value and
fat content of the meat. The Fish Culture Research Institute plays a key
role in a national breeding programme in Hungary that provides fish farms
and fish seed production units with parental lines of hybrid common carp.

Report of the Trilateral Workshop on Lanternfish in the Gulf of Oman.
Muscat, Oman, 7-9 May 2001 FAO Fisheries Report No. 665 Rome, 2001, 28 pp.
    ISBN 92-5-104726-X ISSN 0429-9337 TC/M/Y2967/E $12.00 The main issues
addressed by the workshop included the situation of myctophid resources in
the Gulf of Oman, their biology and stock assessment, estimation of the
precautionary harvest levels, research activities for assuring their
effective management, bycatch from lanternfish fishing, exploitation trials
in the Gulf of Oman, efficient capture and handling, options for
utilization, processing and ecology of myctophids in the Gulf of Oman.
