    Hello, Ranny Huang,

Here are some phrases that explain membership from the IAMSLIC website
    <http://www.iamslic.org/index.html>:

    MEMBERSHIP INVITATION:

IAMSLIC is an organization through which members exchange ideas and

explore issues of mutual concern. You are invited to join us in
    our
endeavors, as we seek to provide a forum for sharing ideas and
    resources
within the various aquatic science disciplines. The organization
    has a long
history of cooperation with kindred international organizations and
    provides
ample opportunities for international cooperation. The only
    requirement for
membership is an interest in library and information science as it
    is applied to
aquatic science. Membership is on an annual basis, from October 1
    to
         September 30.

FOR INDIVIDUALS AND INSTITUTIONS IN THE "DEVELOPED
         WORLD":

Personal memberships are $35.00 (U.S.) per year and include voting
privileges, membership directory, and a subscription to the
    newsletter.
Institutional memberships are $35.00 (U.S.) per year and include
    voting
privileges for one institutional representative, membership
    directory, and a
         subscription to the quarterly newsletter.

Perhaps your librarian, Mrs. Isabel Jayme will want to describe her own
feelings about your bypassing her, but if I were your librarian, I would
definitely feel the way Ms. Butler would. There are many things
librarians do with information we receive from our patrons, including
monitoring the materials needed by them. This monitoring is all for the
patrons' benefit. Not only do we collect the statistics necessary to
argue for funding to support and expand our library collections, but we
see which items are most frequently needed, so that when we DO find
funding for new library materials, we know which titles to purchase. In
a way, your bypassing your librarian is giving her an unsaid message
that you do not regard her talents and training as important in your
research efforts, which I would find a bit insulting if I were she.

I urge you to take a look at the IAMSLIC website. And if she is not
aware of it, you might let Mrs. Jayme see it too. We'd love to have her
join us. We interact and support each other in so many ways.

    Elizabeth Cooksey, Librarian
    Skidaway Institute of Oceanography
    Savannah, Georgia
