* From the Gerontological Society of America.
<http://www.geron.org/Default.asp> The State of Aging and Health
in America
<http://www.agingsociety.org/agingsociety/pdf/state_of_aging_report.pdf>Report
is now available online. The report illustrates changes that have
taken place during the past two decades in several important
measures of older American's health.
* From the Economic Research Service of USDA (3/03). The Food and
Nutrition Research Program is accepting proposals for support of
high-priority research of importance to USDA's food assistance and
nutrition programs in three areas: program design and operations;
food assistance as a safety net; and obesity, diet quality, and
health outcomes. Proposals are due May 19, 2003. Anticipated
funding in fiscal 2003 for competitive grants and cooperative
agreements will be approximately $1 million.
* US Senator Larry Craig, Chairman, Senate Special Committee on
Aging asked colleagues to co-sponsor the 2003 Medicare Medical
Nutrition Therapy Amendment Act (S. 632) to expand coverage of
nutrition therapy to those with heart disease (Press release
4/8/03). This will improve the health of older adults and reduce
the overall medical costs paid for by Medicare. He noted that the
Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended adding medical nutrition
therapy to improve the quality of care at a comparatively low cost
of treatment. Congress approved Medicare coverage for medical
nutrition therapy services for diabetes and renal disease -
coverage has been in effect since January 1, 2002. IOM report "The
Role of Nutrition in Maintaining Health in the Nation's Elderly:
