Recognizing that computing plays an important role in higher
education, the campus recently developed a statement of expectation
regarding student computer ownership. The statement says beginning
this fall, "every entering undergraduate student will be expected to
own a computer that meets certain minimum performance standards and
that can connect effectively to the Internet." Currently almost 90%
of UC Davis students own a computer. So, the statement represents an
evolutionary step rather than a revolutionary leap, and simply
reaffirms what undergraduate students themselves already know: that
computer literacy and ownership play a critical role in a university
education.
Rather than require a specific system, the expectation states a
minimum set of functional requirements computers must meet to be used
effectively in the student's education at UC Davis. After
negotiating with several vendors, the campus is recommending a
computer purchase program through Dell Computer Corporation for
systems meeting the functional requirements. This recommended
ownership program includes many value-added features as well as
special pricing on four standard hardware and software packages.
If you would like to learn more about this computer ownership
expectation or the recommended computer purchase program, plan to
attend one of the faculty informational Q&A sessions. These sessions
have been scheduled at the Arbor (161 Everson, between Mrak Hall and
Shields Library) for the following times:
