Subject: Professional Development Leave Proposals
To all Federation members:
A few new required items have been added to the checklist on the cover
sheet for the Professional Development Leave (PDL) Proposal: these are not
discussed in the application instructions. The following explanation comes
from Steven Blank:
The "list of service activity" and "list of publications since 1994" are
additional pieces of information to help the review committee assess each
candidate's proposal. The same checklist is used for Academic Senate leave
requests.
"Service activities" include all department, college, campus and systemwide
committees served on, plus any professional organization participation and
public service activities related to a person's UC position.
Publications of all sorts for the last five years (since 1994) should be
listed, to indicate the nature of research/creative activity
over the immediate preceeding period of qualifying service to UCD.
Overall, this information is expected to help the review committee judge a
proposal's relevance to the candidate's research and/or service activities
at UCD. It has been found that relevance to teaching responsibilities is
easily identified by simply listing any courses that are taught in the
subject area of the proposed work, but it was not as easy to evaluate a
proposal's relevance to other academic activities. By adding the requested
information about service and research activities, this shortcoming is
being addressed.
