This is like asking "why won't my car run". It could be many things.
I would recommend she join the DC30 list where she is more likely to
get a DC30 experienced user.

In the meantime, look at the system folder (under control panel) and
see if it shows any IRQ conflicts.

BTW: you cannot record directly from the timeline with the DC30
without rendering. Either somebody gave her wrong info on this
point or she misunderstood. The first and easiest thing to check is
to make sure that she has her output set to either S-video or
composite. Double click the Pinnacle icon on the taskbar to verify.
