Hi Ben:
First, you don't necessarily need to be concerned about an arbitrary 2GB
limit on NT.
If you want to go 1st class, get an NT4.0 system and install full
Digisuite hardware. Get 8 18 gig Seagate Barracudas for 144 gigs of
storage. Set them up as a single stripe set on Digisuite's on board
Adaptec UW controller. File size is no problem- Digisuite on NT supports
up to 12 TB (terabytes) per file.
With this setup, you can capture 2-1/2 hours of video in lossless
quality, using the supplied Digitools utility.
The computer, boardset, drives, etc., will come in at about $20k.
Want lower (but still broadcast) quality at a lower price point? Go for
Digisuite LE and save about $7k on the board set. It does not support
lossless mode, but 450k/frame MJPEG is still broadcast quality overkill.
If you're willing to drop to 200k/frame, the quality is still in the
Betacam SP range and you can go for 4 18 gig drives instead of 8. That
will keep the cost below $10k.
My needs are more modest than yours, but I routinely deal with
individual video files of 4g or more without problems. If you're on NT,
you owe it to yourself to check out Digisuite and Digisuite LE. Once
you've been able to forget about the 2GB limit, you'll never go back.
