If you're developing commerical product, you really *have* to get
yourself on the beta list. Otherwise nasty surprises happen. There was a
warning from Apple at least a month ago--on both the private beta and
public QT lists--about the need to get QT 3.0 licenses then because 4.0
was soon to be the only option. But you don't want to hear this now...

As a guess, Apple supposedly fixed the problem with gamma and the ATI
drivers in QT4 and 8.6. By disabling the ATI software you may be causing
the problem to reappear by disabling the fix. Try running "stock"
software under 8.6.

Another idea: I'm told that the OpenGL installer from Apple also includes
updated ATI drivers that fix some problems. You might want to try those,
and if they fix your problem, see if you can license them for
redistribution. You can find it at
<ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/opengl/opengl_install.hqx>.

Since the acceleration (video overlay) that changes the gamma only
happens in the frontmost, unobscured window, you can test to be certain
that video acceleration is the culprit by placing another window slightly
overlapping your video window, or by turning off "direct to stage" in
Director. Neither are real solutions, but will at least prove you're on
the right track.
