The Firewire drives may be limited in availability and size at first. I
might recommend a G3 Series 1988 computer which will hold 3 of the new 14g
drives. This would be about three hours worth of video in a laptop. If that's
not enough, you can, of course, daisy chain firewire drives off the firewire
card... but with CapSure and the 14g drives available now, it's a great way
to get started.
Plus, there are several single PC card solutions for external SCSI and
EIDE drives.
This capability makes me want to buy a used PowerBook and disconnect the
built-in screen. Connect it to one of NEC's 20" LCD monitors and make that my
DV editing station. It just so happens that the keyboard houses all the
drives. :)
If you got to have a big keyboard... you can velcro the PowerBook to the
back of the monitor and use the ADB port to connect a full-size keyboard and
mouse.
Then I'll upgrade to a G4 processor in the PowerBook for the realtime
effects....
