Basic Premiere/DV question

Dear DV people,

This is a very basic question. I have the following things:

Beige Mac G3 with a firewire card
Canon XL-1
Premiere 4.2.1 with the most recent movie capture plug-in for v4.2

I open the Movie Capture control panel and I can use device control to play
the camera - works well. I want to capture full-resolution images. I have
set the Recording Settings so that I capture at 720x576 (PAL) and every
other preference in my project reflects this size. I have nominated DV-PAL
as my compressor and have chosen the best compression i.e. 5.00.

My problem is that my captured movies seem to be at low resolution. They
are the correct pixel size (720x576) but the images are very chunky or
grainy as though the underlying storage is at about 400x300 or maybe even
less. The movie files are huge.

It is almost as if the Movie Capture utility is recording the little
thumbnail I see before I hit the "record" button instead of the actual DV
image. But I have definitely asked to record at 720x576 pixels and NOT
"record at current size".

Is this a known problem with Premiere 4.2, a problem with hard disk access
speed on my mac, or something I have set up wrong?
