Premiere 5.0 does not use its preview files when building final movies--which effectively doubles rendering time for video that has to be compiled. Furthermore, he ignores Premiere's interface downgrade. Version 5.0's window adjustability is more limited, hindering interface customization.* The Commands window no longer offers color coding or column-orientation options. The Controller is now locked to the Preview screen and is too large and cumbersome even at its smallest setting. The most staggering omission of all is one I discovered in the first ten minutes of operation: all transitions render three to five times slower than in version 4.2.X. Add this rendering slowdown to 5.0's inability to utilize preview files, and I can't even calculate the overall addition of hours to a project.

Yes, it's true that Premiere 5.0 doesn't use preview files; this is caused by a bug that will be fixed in a maintenance release that Adobe plans to ship before the end of the year. ..... Premiere 5.0 is indeed, however, often noticeably slower than 4.2, as the review pointed out. Adobe claims that the maintenance update will address these performance problems.--Jim Heid
