Andy-
A good 'down and dirty' way to calibrate monitors is to throw up SMPTE bars on
your monitor (from your playback equipment) and place a piece of 6500 degree
Kelvin blue filter gel over it. Now use the color and tint controls to
calibrate the image so that the upper and lower portion of the bars seem
identical. Now adjust the brightness and contrast controls so that only the far
right of the three black bars in the lower right hand corner of your screen is
visible. These adjustments are interactive and will need to be made a few times
until they all line up.
