calibrating monitors

I took an excellent Avid Onlining seminar a while back, and one of the
subjects covered was a "down and dirty" way to calibrate NTSC monitors (like
in a facility where you don't have scopes). Unfortunately I can't find my
notes. Anyone have any tips on how to proceed on something like this?
