avi query-ie kiss of death noone will answer

I'm one of those poor suckers still delivering off 2xCD-roms onto low-end =
(486&up) pc's running Windows 3.1. I suppose I should be greatful that =
I'm not delivering pizzas- but that, at least, would be more =
straightforward.

I've been asked to compress a large avi file, and to convert some qt files =
to avi's. I plan on using the indeo 3.2 codec because I have it. I'd be =
interested in indeo 4.1 if it was cheap, or better yet, free; but I'd want =
to make sure it would perform on our target.

What's your favorite codec for lossless (or less lossy) compression for =
avi's? I need to run the images through windows debabelizer (which cannot =
see qt files), and then the avi files get compressed again when they get =
saved with their palettes. So I'd like to use as lossless a compression =
as possible before I run the files through debaelizer.

My other question: can I use Premiere 5 on a mac to make an avi file? I =
have a qt to avi convertor, but I'm hoping P5 will do a better job. I =
know I could compress with indeo and export as a flattened movie, but will =
it be an avi and play independently of quicktime?

Thanks in Advance!
