Donald A. Strauss Foundation Scholarship
Campus Deadline: Friday, January 28, 2005
Description:The Donald A. Strauss Scholarship allows juniors to pursue a
public service project during their senior year by providing $10,000 for
educational expenses. The project may be a new undertaking or an extension
of the recipient's current activities. UC Davis can nominate three students
for the Strauss Award.
Eligibility:*Full-time juniors
*3.00 GPA
*Interest in Public Service
Selection:Selectors look for applicants who are interested in public
service, possess outstanding leadership potential, have effective
communication skills, and "wish to make a difference" in local, regional, or
national communities.
{The Strauss Foundation defines public service as work (paid or volunteer)
in government; organizations serving the public interest; national,
regional, or local health organizations; and service-oriented, nonprofit
organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help disadvantaged
persons or protect the environment. Fields of study include (but are not
limited to) the sciences both biological and physical, engineering,
agriculture, environmental management, economics, political science and the
other social sciences, English, history, and the other liberal arts and
humanities, public health, public administration, government, and
education.}
The project proposal, a major focus of the selection process, should
be carefully prepared and realistic in scope. The foundation prefers
projects designed for longevity (likely to continue after implementation).
See Carrie Devine, the UCD campus representative, for assistance. For
