    Hi -

UCLA has been a subscriber for the past two years now. Libbie
Stephenson our Data Archivist is paying for all-campus access. I've cc'd
her to keep her in the loop as it sounds like CalMap might be pursuing
    at Tier 1?

I think there is overlap between GILS and UC/S Maps. How many campuses
have subscribed to Social Explorer? I presume Laura has explored the
CDL website for vendors and understands Tiered purchasing. She could
create a price list for Tier 1 purchasing to the subscribers and ask
them to present it to their consortial group.

I know we talked about this as a group, but Social Explorer obviously
has wider applicability than our UC/S map group...any suggestions would

    Dear Tracey,

Thank you so much for your insight. I agree, it's a little difficult to
know who to propose our services to for a system wide agreement. I can
tell you that we could very easily negotiate a price for the entire
system that would be somewhere around 30% off the individual
subscriptions if all campuses were to participate......which would be a
wonderful bargain. Is there an avenue via the UC Library Techology
Advisory Group that would be appropriate to contact? I can see from the
LTAG website that Sam Dunlap from UCSD is the president.

I don't feel that I can give up on UC as we have had several requests
for information from a number of the campuses, and UCLA is one of our
biggest users. We track usage at all of the campuses and there is
interest. Given the economy, I would think that at the very least, it
would be beneficial for the system to take advantage of the free premium
    trial for a month.

    Hi Laura,

I think we're all well aware of the product in the UC Map librarian
circle as we've discussed the product as a potential purchase. However,
as you know, the UC system is a complex one with almost innumerable
different departments and individuals. As an overall strategy to
access/expose Social Explorer across the system, I don't have much to
offer other than what you are currently doing.

    >From the Social Sciences & Humanities Library at UCSD, we certainly see
value in your product but we just don't know if we have the budgetary
capacity to purchase it at $2000 (or even slightly less with the
    consortial pricing) annually.

We will certainly let you know when we've reached a decision about what
    we can do.

    Hello Tracey,
Thank you for the continued interest in Social Explorer. The gentleman
    that
I have spoken to at UC Berkeley is:

    Harrison G. DEKKER, MLIS +1 510 250-7901 hdekker@library.berkeley.edu

Harrison is having some of his colleagues review the website. He
    mentioned
that if the UC system were to subscribe, that he would be involved in
    the
set-up of the subscription. Perhaps you know him? It's interesting
    because
we have had interest from end-users from 5 or 6 of the UC campuses over
    the
last year. I think setting up the system with a free 30 day trial would
    be
most informative for the end-users and decision makers. It's a
    wonderful
resourse to take advantage of as a free trial, and would inform any
decisions about the value of subsriptions. I'll have to admit, I'm not
    sure
what the best path is to orient this product to the entire UC system.
    Do
you have any thoughts on that that you could share with me?
