Hi - There is a GIS layer of the Public Land Survey System (i.e.
townships, ranges, sections) in California that includes Spanish and
Mexican land grant areas (because they were excluded from surveys).

Its called "PLSA" and was available from the Teale GIS Library. There
    is a copy online here:
    ftp://casil.ucdavis.edu/old-casil/gis.ca.gov/teale/plsa/

It has an attribute field called "LANDGRANT" that includes the land
    grant name (where applicable).

There were several maps published pre-1960 of the ranchos (most prior to 1940), and more recent ones (like in Los Angeles: A to Z) which show the boundaries but nothing else. Anyone ever see anything like this? A shape file of California or Los Angeles ranchos would work, too.
