    Hi all,

After hearing from UCR's Earth Science department liaison and our AUL, UCR
is definitely interested in these maps. We'll be looking at the price like
all of you in this difficult budget year. Add us to your list.

    Subject: [CALMAP:433] Re: digital - CHINA & TIBET topos - viewing options;
    list of who's interested; pricing

    1. viewing options:
These are tiff files so they can be viewed/zoomed in/out
etc using any image-processing software that can
deal with large files; we generally use Adobe Photoshop.
Copying is easy in the sense they're tiff,
difficult in the sense that they're going to be large -
my guess is, around 100 megabytes??
but I'll ask Geoff Forbes of LandInfo.

    2. who's interested:
    Understanding that probably none of
us knows what our materials budget will
be for 2008-2009 (probably not good) and
I'll be sure to tell Geoff that:

    a. Davis
    b. Irvine
    c. Stanford
    d. UCLA
    e. UCSB

    3. provided this goes forward,
    which campus places the order:
I'm fine with having SB place the order
but I certainly don't insist on it :-)
The head of acquisitions (Brenda Peter) is very
good at her work and very helpful,
and she says for other UC libraries
it's just a recharge and not much more
    work than any other order.
And we do have a history of having
had Stanford send us money for a shared
purchase, and while it is complex in
some ways, at least we - or rather Brenda
Peter :-) - know how to do it.

    4. pricing: current price is about $10K for digital,
    about $3K for paper maps.
I'll email with Geoff about pricing but
I get this feeling LandInfo is more inclined
to increase rather than to decrease
the price in a situation where several
libraries are tossing money into the pot,
because of course they'd sure rather sell
it separately to each of us :-)

I did tell Geoff that this wasn't something
I could afford to do on my own and
that I would check with other UC libraries
    about paying for this.

Also, I don't seem to have anything to bargain
with at least that I can see; in the past,
there have been times (e.g., the Brazil 1:50K
and 1:100K and 1:250K purchases) where
we Fedexed (at LandInfo's expense both
directions) our paper maps that LandInfo
didn't have - then they scanned the maps
and gave us copies of the scans; and we
also got what I thought was an ok price
on the paper maps we purchased to fill in holdings.
