Dear Colleagues,
UC Davis Shields Library has announced the following changes this week. Many logistical details are yet to be worked out. I will continue to be the Map/GIS Librarian and map/GIS reference and collection development will continue to be my primary responsibilities. I am optimistic that once the dust settles, we will continue to be able to provide the same level of support to our patrons as we have been doing. If you have any questions about these changes, feel free to contact me. I'll keep you notified of changes in contact information as they occur.
Thanks,
Kathy Stroud, Map/GIS Librarian

Subject: [LibAll] Government Information/Maps
Effective July 1, 2008 service and personnel changes to the Government Information/ Maps Department will be implemented. These changes will increase work flow efficiencies and in doing so assist the General Library to address current budgetary challenges. The changes are in sync with organizational trends in U.S. academic libraries.
Service Changes:
The Shields Library lower level Government Information reference services will move to the Shields Library second floor Humanities/Social Sciences (H/SS) Reference Desk. The H/SS Desk will be the primary service area for social sciences related government information. During this summer, relevant reference collections will be transferred to the second floor.
Micro formats, periodicals, and other collections will remain on the lower level where service desk staff will focus on directional questions and use of these materials. All specialized reference questions will be referred to the appropriate librarian subject specialist.
Personnel Changes:
Marcia Meister will join the Shields Library Humanities and Social Sciences Department where she will continue to serve as the Library’s representative for the Federal Depository Library Program. In addition, she will serve as the bibliographer for Political Science (including government policy), International Relations, and Clothing & Fashion Design.
Juri Stratford will join the Shields Library Humanities and Social Sciences Department. He will continue to serve as the Foreign, International Documents, and Social Sciences Data Librarian. He will serve as the bibliographer for Communications/Journalism, Demography, and Film Studies.
Kathy Stroud will join the Shields Library Biological/Agricultural Sciences Department where she will continue her responsibilities as the Maps/GIS Librarian and supervisor of Map Collections staff.
Patsy Inouye will continue to serve as the State and Local Documents Librarian. She will serve as the Temporary Transitional Coordinator for Government Information as we transfer government documents reference service to the H/SS Reference desk. Effective September 1, 2008 she will transfer to the Shields Library Special Collections Department where she will continue her State and Local Documents collection development responsibilities and serve as the California History Archives Specialist with primary responsibility for the Library’s Photographic collections.
Linda Kennedy will devote her full-time effort to her permanent role as the Head of Access Services.
The current periodicals operations will be handled by the Shields Library Access Services Department. Mandy Piggee will join the Shields Library Access Services department and continue to be located at her current lower level office.
