In summary, other catalogers at this
library are already using form/genre
terms in 655 extensively
and said to go ahead and use
the terms we need.
I mentioned that we map types
would like to do this, and it
was like throwing a match into
a stack of very dry kindling - in
a good way :-)
I got instant response from
several persons in the orig-catalogers meeting,
and before I knew it was being
asked to participate in a info/discussion
meeting for all the catalogers,
on use of 655 form/genre values.
Fortunately the person in charge
of authority control (Cathy Turner)
nobly took on the bulk of the work
and I'll see if I can find the
digital file of her presentation.
Fer shure I can send you a list
of terms in use here and also
my brief presentation on using
655 for digital cm.
So seems to me we should go ahead
on this, if it's ok with other
libraries involved.
Persons here said putting the
list up on a Website that is
easy to get to and (relatively)
easy to change/add/delete
is a good idea.
Very interesting, positive point
from Cathy Turner - she says her
observation is that persons are
taking *any* term in LCSH that
they would like to use as 655 |a
and labeling it in the indicator
as a term from a controlled thesaurus -
even though LCSH states said
term is not to be used in, e.g.,
650 and 651 as a |v ! The jesuitical
ingenuity of catalogers finds
its way through yet another problema.
