Those of you in SoCal might be interested in a biogeographically
oriented event on 30-31 May called the BioBlitz, sponsored by the
National Geographic Society with the Santa Monica Mountains National
Recreation Area. In the 24 hour period, volunteers led by various kinds
of biological scientists inventory as many species of critters and
plants as they can find within the confines of the SaMo. This is the
second one they've done and the first in SoCal.
If you're interested in finding out more, you can check out the
following web page:
https://www.ngsednet.org/special_events/registration.cfm?ref=8
You might especially want to look at the schedule list because it
identifies where they need volunteers yet. This will also lead you to
the sign up process if you decide you want to participate.
Additionally, from noon to 6pm, at Paramount Ranch (Kanan Road exit
south from the 101) there will be a "celebration of biodiversity"
featuring (especially for you UCSC folk) the Banana Slug String Band.
