    i asked Phil Hoehn before we scanned
    it if by any slight chance he had a copy of
    the word-processing file, and he said
    that was long gone.

    Cynthia has kindly already sent me
    a dig-file inventory for the series she
    has. (?i can't remember if she sent it
    just to me, or to all of calmap).

    am sure everyone can come up
    with more pros and cons than i have listed :-)
    '
    pros:
    - it can be difficult to find bib records for topographic-map
    series (and thematic series, although these are easier to find)
     in MELVYL because the subject headings
    can include single-sheet maps; also i regret to say
    not all of the top-series bib records for this
    collection have "maps, topographic" in the
    subject heading; it can be just "Maps."
    Limiting by beginning date of publication
    does help but the problem there is often
    we aren't really sure when a series began;
    and it does take a little while to look that info
    up (e.g., the Bohme 3-v inventory; World Mapping Today)
    - it gives an overview of what the various collections
    have, in one relatively convenient place
    - as topo and thematic series get more expensive
    per sheet and as the emphasis on shared-print increases
    for UC collections, it's more than ever important
    to know if a given series is already owned by
    one of us and if it's maintained.

    cons:
    - updating would be a considerable amount of
    work and would be in addition to the Conspectus;
    there might be a way to use the Conspectus instead.
    - cataloging is very labor-intensive and
    the idea of in effect recording holdings
    twice is wasteful of time.
