A knotty little problem there. The 1953 USDA flight of Sacramento County
(ABC-1953) was actually contracted for flight in 1952. You can tell this
from the contract number that appears on the index sheets
(ABC-PMA-48-52-DC Item No. 3). Pacific Air Industries (PAI) was the
contractor who flew this flight for USDA-PMA. Although I could find no
accepted frames that appear on the index sheets from 1952, they did
start flying in 1952. It appears that the frames flown in 1952 were not
accepted as part of the official flight. We acquired the PAI collection
with some others in 1986. Included were several unaccepted rolls from
this flight that were flown in 1952 (September and October). They
duplicate most of the area flown and accepted in 1953, but for some
reason were not good enough to fill USDA specifications and were not
used. Some rolls use the same roll & frame designations (ex.: 3K-57) as
used on the accepted coverage from 1953 but with different areas of
coverage. Some rolls were hand numbered without the "K" designation
(ex.: 4-123). It could be that you somehow have some of these unaccepted
frames flown in 1952 for this flight by PAI. Or maybe not. You say the
indexes match the 1958 coverage. In what way? Do the frames have the "T"
designation used in the 1958 flight (ex.: 68T-38), or do they match by
area of coverage? Hope this helps in some way, and isn't more than you
could possibly want to know about this flight.
