All,
I did some record browsing of digital cartographic materials in our catalog to look for both cataloging practices and call numbers. Below is a summary of what I discovered. I'm not necessarily recommending any of these. I'm just reporting what we have occasionally done in the past.
1) UC Davis does not have any specific local practices for cataloging DCM. We do a lot of copy cataloging, so our records do reflect other local practices, but not consistently.
2) A number of our records have a 256a field with file format listed. The terms used here are:
· Computer data and program (this is probably the most popular)
· Computer data
· Computer document (actually used for vector files, not just text or image files)
· Computer map data
· Computer cartographic data
· Electronic data
· Electronic data and program
· Data sets and program
· Geographic information systems (GIS) data and programs in multiple formats
· Text and Images (used for what appeared to be a PDF)
A few of the records actually listed individual file formats (e.g., INFO or .e00) and programs in the 256a. I believe the 256a is not indexed in Melvyl.
3) A few of our records contain the following LCSH subject headings, I believe largely incorrectly used (at least in the case of our DRGs).
· Databases (this was the most popular)
· Software
· Interactive multimedia
· Data processing
4) One record did use the 653 for Maps-Digital-Raster
