Re: [CALMAP:52] for UCSMLG meeting 12/11/06 - subject headThanks, Mary, for the great first draft. So far, what we have proposed should sail through fairly easy because it is just formalizing what we are already doing to some extent (through copy-cataloging). However, I have a few discussion points we might want to follow up with at the meeting. The first two are in response to your question concerning additional terms for 653 |a.
1) We do have the below LCSH subject headings which generally appear in the 650 field. If we have them in the 650 field, do we need to repeat them in a 653? Generally our catalogs include the 650, 653, and 655 fields in our subject indexes. Not repeating these could impact browsing by subject, but shouldn't impact keyword search by subject.
Aerial Views
Aerial Photographs
Remote sensing images
Remote sensing maps
Images from space
2) Do we want to include either "Geographic information systems data", "GIS data" or "geodatabases" or "electronic atlases" in our terms? I would like to be able to distinguish between scanned maps without georeferencing, "GIS-ready" data, and electronic atlases where the data can only be used in conjunction with the accompanying file reading program.
3) Do we want to (or can we) have additional terms to "Online" to use in 655 |a such as CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and hard drive. These might also be useful as search times to identify the specific carrier used.
See you Monday.

Hi Mary,
Regarding the question at the end about a subject heading for aerials -
Here at UCSC, we use this subject heading format for aerial photos:
Monterey County (Calif.) -- Aerial photographs
We do make the records for aerials "material type e", to indicate that it's a map.
I''d be interested to know what you and others use. - Cynthia
Here's draft 2 that Kathy and I put together.
