    Hi Rusty,

How closely does the UCSB library watch what any student does at the
photocopy machine for a book, a journal, or an atlas? Do you keep an eye
on what people scan on the small scanners? Where does fair use come into it?

We make sure to let people know when they ask that they cannot publish what
they scan without permission. But, we don't police it any more than we
police our photocopy machines. What we should do is put a notice next to
the scanner stating the copyright rules.

You are right, these are thorny issues!
